219 GOP congresspeople voted to cut Medicare and Medicaid by TRILLIONS of dollars, to give HUGE tax breaks to the ultra-rich!
The House of Representatives voted 219 to 206 on a right-wing House budget resolution designed to cut $5.8 trillion from Medicare, Medicaid, the education system, national infrastructure and other vital public services over the the next decade. Meanwhile, the resolution will also cut taxes for the richest echelon of Americans, as well as corporations, by trillions of dollars.
Even worse, the resolution will allow Senate Republicans to fast-track the right-wing’s tax agenda by enabling them to pass a tax plan with only 51 votes, instead of the 60 votes customarily required. So much for bipartisanship.
“This budget resolution is the first step toward an immoral tax scheme that will hand trillions of dollars to millionaires and corporations at the expense of millions of America’s working families, many of whom will actually see a tax increase,” said Frank Clemente, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness. He went on to say: “these tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations will ultimately be paid for by cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, education, disability services, and other national priorities, while the expansion of the deficit will further threaten Social Security. The Republicans who voted to advance this plan owe their constituents an explanation.”

According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, Trump’s tax cut plan will cost at least $2.4 trillion. About 80% of the tax cuts will be given to the wealthiest 1% by 2027, at which point they would get an average tax cut of $207,000. Middle-class families, on the other hand, will wind up paying an average of $2,000 more in taxes, with a range from $1,300 to $2,500, depending on their income.
Tack-on effects of these tax cuts for the ultra-rich include a bloating of the national deficit, and the risk of jeopardizing long-term funding for social security, Medicare, Medicaid and education. It will also repeal the estate tax, as well as take away the state and local tax deduction from everyday Americans like you.
