Almost 200 (probably the most members of Congress to ever sue a President) Democratic members of Congress filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday blaming the President of violating the Constitution over foreign money flowing into his business empire.
This is the third lawsuit that Trump has to deal with regarding the same issue. The same as the two previous federal lawsuits, this one, is accusing Trump of illegal profits from his businesses.
A total of 196 member of Congress believe that Trump ignored a constitutional clause that bans federal officials from emoluments, or gifts coming from foreign countries.
This includes accepting trademark approvals from foreign governments regarding goods and services produced by his businesses, and collecting payments from foreign diplomats checked in his hotel.
Trump did for a fact turned over control from his business to his adult sons and a senior executive. However, he did not divest from it.
Meaning that he is in a position to profit from the Trump Organization’s dealings with foreign governments.
According to Mr. Blumenthal, a former Connecticut attorney general, Trump’s business were involved in dealings with 20 countries but were shrouded in secrecy.
“The truth is we have no clue about the president’s investors,” Blumenthal said in an interview. “How much is Russian money?”
“What we are seeking first and foremost is disclosure,” he said. “We cannot consent to what we don’t know.”
This makes things impossible for Congress to determine whether the President was receiving illegal benefits.
