Angela Merkel used the campaign event in Munich on Sunday to distances herself from the US and the UK.
“The times in which [Germany] could fully rely on others are partly over. I have experienced this in the last few days,” Merkel said during the event. “We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands.”
The German chancellor did not mention names, but she was clearly referring to shattered relationship Germany now shares with UK and US.
Merkel’s comments came after the G7 summit that she described as “difficult” and “unsatisfactory.”
Trump’s ideas on issues like trade, climate change and immigration often run counter compared by other G7 members.
He declined to support the Paris climate pact with an explanation that he needed more time to make the final decision.
But according to Axios report, Trump already decided to pull out of the deal. He allegedly told Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt that he’s not going to support the Paris climate pact.
The close relationship with Barack Obama could be the number one reason for potentially radical shift in US-German relations.
Merkel described Obama as a friend and a strong German ally, and Obama called Merkel “one of my favorite partners throughout my presidency.”
